A gentle place to begin

Baduanjin practice: your questions, answered.

A practical guide to qigong for beginners: how to start, what to expect and how to make space for your own needs.

How long should I practise each day?

Start with an amount that feels comfortable. For example, try 5–10 minutes or explore one Baduanjin exercise at a time, and gradually build up if you feel comfortable. You can pause, take breaks and adapt the movements to your range.

There is no single number of minutes that suits everyone. Regular practice that fits your life is a useful place to start.

How long does it take to notice a difference?

People’s experiences vary. You may notice how your body feels during or after a session, but there is no guaranteed timetable or outcome. Research into qigong is ongoing, and Baduanjin is not a substitute for medical care.

Who should take extra care?

If you are pregnant, recovering from surgery or an injury, have a chronic health condition, balance difficulties or other concerns, speak with a qualified health professional about whether and how these qigong exercises are appropriate for you.

Stop if you feel pain, dizziness, chest discomfort or unusual shortness of breath. Seek medical help for concerning symptoms; seek urgent help for severe or persistent symptoms.

Can I adapt the movements?

Yes. Move slowly and within a comfortable range, use support for balance where needed, and do not force a stretch. If a movement does not feel right for you, stop and seek individual advice.
